Loose Ends, Spot the Damn Ball Already!

Dr. B posted an article a few weeks ago regarding the wing-t/spread option/flex bone slicing apart the Ga Tech style of scoring points. Here is an addendum to that piece that further reflects the facts presented by Dr. B here .

-Clemson obviously has the CJ Spiller for Heisman campaign up and running. I personally have to wonder if this was promised to Spiller last season, and if this has much to do with his return. It will be extremely difficult for CJ, especially with two previous winners of the award still in college football. These sentiments are further outlined in this upstate fish rap .

There is no doubt this guy is a special player...I just hope he touches the ball 25 times per game.

-Da'Quan Bowers is another player that everyone expects big things out of. He had an extremely productive freshman campaign last season, and appears to be taking the summer workouts more seriously this year. Most importantly, with Sapp back, Kevin Alexander proving to be a solid player, and Brown able to play a few snaps, I feel the end position will be the strongest group for the Tigers this season.

-Tim Tebow values himself at $2 mil for insurance purposes, and the great Lou Holtz fields a better team of retirees for a game against the Japanese than he pulled together in Columbia.

-Otherwise, practice is just around the corner and the season cannot get here fast enough!

  1. So what if they promised the Heisman campaign to CJ in order to get him to stick around? First of all, he deserves it, and second, that is a small price to pay to keep him here for his senior season. I think the odds are stacked against him, but you just never know what might happen. If he has a monster season and we win the ACC and go to the Orange Bowl, and Tebow gets hurt or has a poor season, then he might be able to beat them out. Keep in mind that Bradford, McCoy, and Tebow have set the bar mighty high based on what they did last season. If they do not live up to those numbers, and CJ has a huge season, then his season will look more impressive even if the other guys are having great seasons.

  2. If a Spiller for Heisman campaign promise from Dabo kept Spiller at CU for another year, it was a brilliant move. Was this promise enough to tilt the scales against CJ being drafted in the first round and earning a boatlaod of cash in the pro's? Spiller is an excellent, dynamic player. I think everyone would like for Spiller to win a trophy. Point is, the other guys have been there before and are playing with more talented athletes in higher profile games, and against higher profile opponents. Clemson will need to feed him the ball continuously and he will need to have a boatload of yards to knock these guys off of the top position. That being said, CJ is talented enough to make some noise and I wish him and the Tigers the best of luck this season.

  3. Yeah I dont think CJ is going to garner much attention for Heisman with McCoy, Bradford, and Tebow sticking around too.

He'll really have to put up a shitload of yards to break in that group.

  4. Alright, say that Bradford, McCoy, and Tebow fall short of the numbers they posted last season, and that none of those teams are undefeated. Now say that CJ gets the ball 25 times a game, and has 1,500 yards rushing, 800 yards receiving, 20 touchdowns, and returns 4 kicks for touchdowns while leading us to the ACC Championship. In that scenario, I think he would win, because the pollsters are not going to want to reward the QB's for having worse seasons than they did last year. I really think that it is hard for a player to follow a monster season with another monster season, and that those guys are under a ton of pressure, but also probably feel as though they have arrived. CJ, on the other hand, is somewhat under the radar right now, and has a ton to prove to a lot of people.

  5. I think that many yards is a pipedream, but if he does it then I'd say he becomes a definite finalist and likely a winner.

The Tebowchild could have an average year and still win it, because God loves him more than anyone else.

  6. I agree thse are extremely ambitious numbers for CJ, but if he is really getting the ball 25 times a game, then he should put up some big numbers. If you think about it, just about every player who has ever won that trophy has posted some huge numbers. What kind of numbers did Reggie Bush post when he won it? What kind of numbers did Darren McFadden have his last year at Arkansas? I don't know, but he needs that kind of performance and a championship run in the ACC to really get into the conversation.

If CJ does not win it, then I hope Tebow is not the winner, just because I am sick of the announcers pretty much openly admitting they have a man crush on him. I applaud players for coming back for their senior seasons, but I will not be upset when Tebow's eligibility runs out.
